Form Finding Design began with a principle we have carried since our earliest school days and through to the late nights of university: Keep It Simple, Stupid. The KISS principle is one that's easy to recite and hard to practice. Simplicity is not a setting you switch on; it is a discipline, earned slowly, and never quite finished. However, what does this mean for design? How do we avoid unnecessary complexity? Is complexity, perhaps, needed in some situations? Mastering simplicity, or a balance between the two, is a lifelong pursuit; but every great journey begins with a single step. At Form Finding Design, we have embraced this challenge and embarked on a new design process, refining our vision one image at a time. This is our work of a lifetime and we are only at the beginning of it.
Borrowed from architecture, Form Finding describes the process by which a structure is allowed to discover its own most efficient shape. It's form arrived at, and not imposed. This idea sits at the centre of how we operate.
Form Finding Design was shaped between two places. From Gaborone, Botswana: the relationship of light to land, the unique patterns and crafts, and the overall pace of a place that makes one more aware of the details. From Melbourne, Australia: the city's design-literate culture, its colour sensibilities, and where half of the practice lives and works. Our work sits in the meeting of the two, neither one diluted by the other.
In our quest to elevate elegance and define our unique signature style, we have collaborated to create a collection that merges minimalistic iconography with intricate, complex colour blends. It's all about understanding restraint and richness in the same frame. This endeavour is an ongoing exploration rather than a final destination, and our work is the documentation of it. We are committed to living between these two extremes, the simple and the complex, and we're excited to share what we have found so far.
